Your teeth can become stained from the consumption of tea, coffee, soda, or red wine. Smoking will also yellow your teeth over time. Poor dental hygiene and fluoride other causes of tooth discoloration. Unfortunately, professional teeth whitening treatments like laser whitening cost a pretty penny.
These days you can get over-the-counter whitening products in the form of gels applied in a tooth tray, chewing gum, rinses, toothpaste, stick-on or dissolving strips and paint-on films. Let’s take a few minutes to look at what constitutes a whitening strip in our Crest Whitening Strips review.
WHAT ARE TEETH WHITENING STRIPS?
Teeth whitening kits are available at a pharmacy, dentist, or grocery store without a prescription. Whitening strips are the most commonly used method to brighten up those pearly whites. Whitening strips are typically less expensive than other treatments.
Whitening strips contain hydrogen or carbamide peroxide which bleaches the color from your teeth. Products that have carbamide peroxide work slightly better than those with hydrogen peroxide at bleaching.
Most whitening strips are made from polyethylene. The strips are applied to your teeth so that the peroxide touches the enamel. Some must be removed, and others dissolve.
Most teeth whitening kits are easy to use. Many come with two sets of strips, one for the upper and one for the lower teeth. Treatment usually consists of twice a day application for about two weeks. If the product has a makeup of 10% peroxide, your teeth should start to look whiter within a week. If there is only 6% peroxide, it could take up to 14 days to see results. Results vary, but most people see brightening that lasts up to four months.
You should brush your teeth about 30 minutes before applying the strips to remove plaque and bacteria. You can brush your teeth again immediately after removing the strips.
Whitening strips that contain chlorine dioxide could damage your teeth. Applying more strips or leaving them in place longer than the recommended time could also harm the enamel. If you have irritated gums after using whitening strips, discontinue use. Swallowing large amounts of hydrogen peroxide gel found on whitening strips can cause an upset stomach. Another thing to consider is that discoloration of teeth might be a sign of an underlying health problem. It’s best to consult your dentist before beginning any whitening treatments.
Tooth whitening will only lighten your current tooth color one to two shades whiter. It will not work on dentures, caps, veneers, or crowns. If you’ve had an injury to your tooth or taken tetracycline antibiotics as a child, chances are tooth whitening won’t help either.
Tooth enamel generally thins as you get older, which allows more of the hard tissue under the top layer to show through. This tissue, dentin, can be grayish, brownish, or even bluish. A smile that is discolored in this manner will not benefit from tooth whitening.

HOW CREST WHITENING STRIPS COMPARES
See how Crest compares with other whitening strips available over the counter in our Crest whitening strips review.
CREST 3D WHITE GLAMOROUS WHITE WHITESTRIPS
Crest 3D White Glamorous White Whitestrips are the only product in the list that has been approved by the American Dental Association as a proven tooth whitening product. It is also the only company that provides a satisfaction guarantee for its product.
The strips are designed to be applied for 30 minutes a day for 14 days. Thirty minutes causes less tooth pain than more prolonged treatment. The high price for the product is the only drawback.
REMBRANDT ONE WEEK WHITENING KIT
The Rembrandt One Week Whitening Kit is a seven-day treatment. The strips are extra wide to fold up around the back side of your teeth, bleaching both the front and behind in one procedure. Rembrandt recommends completing a treatment every six months to maintain the whiteness.
Strips should be applied twice a day for 30 minutes at a time. Rembrandt makes no guarantees about the effectiveness of their product. Nor is it endorsed by the American Dental Association. It is, however, less expensive than Crest.
The One Week Whitening Kit contains PVP, PEG-8, hydrogen peroxide, acrylates copolymer, sodium saccharin, disodium EDTA, poloxamer 407, sodium hydroxide. All but two of these ingredients are also found in Crest’s whitening products. Disodium EDTA disrupts the cells in the enamel surface to allow other chemicals to enter. Poloxamer 407 causes high cholesterol by coating liver cells and is potentially harmful.
LUMIST ADVANCED TEETH WHITENING STRIPS WITH COMFORT FIT TECHNOLOGY
Lumist Advanced Teeth Whitening Strips contain polyethyloxazoline, carbamide peroxide, alcohol, PEG-35M, polyacrylic acid, sucralose, peppermint oil, potassium nitrate, potassium hydroxide. It has a 20% concentration of carbamide peroxide which is more effective for bleaching than the hydrogen peroxide that Crest uses.
Some of these ingredients are similar enough to be adequate replacements for the ingredients in Crest’s whitening product. Potassium hydroxide is a pH adjuster. Polyethyloxazoline is a polymer. PEG-35M is a lubricating coating ingredient. Polyacrylic acid is a solvent.
Peppermint oil is a flavoring, and sucralose is a sweetener. Potassium nitrate provides temporary pain relief for sensitive teeth. Crest does not have any elements in its products designed for sensitive teeth.
Lumist’s strips are large enough to fold under or over your teeth. They are designed to be left on for one or two hours. You should use a paper towel to remove the strips, then brush your teeth to remove any residue. The package contains enough pieces for five days of treatment. While the application is just as easy as Crest, the time per day is considerably longer.
Lumist provides no satisfaction guarantee for its product nor has it been endorsed by the American Dental Association. It costs less than Crest.
ARE CREST WHITENING STRIPS WORTH BUYING?
Crest 3D White Glamorous White Whitestrips are endorsed by the American Dental Association for teeth whitening. Only Crest products have obtained the ADA’s seal of approval. Although there are several treatments available from Crest, we prefer the 30-minute duration products over the longer sessions. We also found no scientific evidence to support light therapy in teeth whitening.
The ingredients found in Crest 3D White Glamorous White Whitestrips are non-toxic and included in safe and appropriate percentages for oral use. The only reservation we have about Crest 3D White Glamorous White Whitestrips is the price, although even at $64.99 it is still substantially less expensive than a professional whitening treatment done by a dental technician.
